Stressed Parents Mean More Screen Time for Kids, Study Finds. That’s Trouble for Back-to-School Season

As a parent, I know how easy it is to use screen time as a way to keep my kid busy — whether it’s TV, learning apps or FaceTime with family, it may buy me a few minutes.

I’m not alone: A new study from Florida International University’s Center for Children and Families finds that stressed parents are more likely to turn to their screens and devices to keep their kids busy or calm. And those parents are less likely to enforce screen-time limits.

That may have been OK for summer break. However, many kids are already back in school. And the early mornings and class time can be a tough transition for families — especially for kids who are used to more time on their tablets. So what should parents do?
