Startling iPhone Notifications Warn Some Users of Possible Targeted Spyware Attacks

This week, Apple sent Threat Notifications to iPhone users it believes faced targeted spyware attacks. These users are scattered across 110 countries and are thought to have been individually singled out.

Specialized threat notifications, which appear on the iPhone's Lock Screen and via email, tell recipients that Apple detected a mercenary spyware attack targeted at their iPhone and offer recommended steps to protect their data and devices. The notifications are reserved for people who could be targeted for digital surveillance because of their job or public status, such as journalists, diplomats, elected officials, and high-visibility executives.

Mercenary spyware is software designed to spy on people and can be sold to governments. Attackers can use it to access device data, prior communication records, microphones, cameras, locations, and more. You can think of it as modern-day phone tapping.
