The Sony ECM-W5 is an excellent wireless mic system that’s especially well-suited to Sony camera owners, thanks to its Multi Interface Shoe receiver and a world-first ability to record 32-bit float audio in-camera. A 500m range, a generous 64GB of storage per transmitter and a 3.5mm lav mic input will appeal to pros too. It’s bulkier and pricier than its key rivals, though, and its noise reduction isn't particularly impressive.

Reasons to buy

  • +In-camera 32-bit float recording
  • +Huge transmission range and rock-solid signal
  • +3.5mm lav mic input with screw lock

Reasons to avoid

  • -Much pricier than its key rivals
  • -Noise reduction is fairly mild
  • -No audio cable included
