Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a major strategic pivot that will reshape the gaming industry, confirming plans to permanently halt the production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation titles starting January 2028. The upcoming shift reflects an undeniable evolution in consumer behavior, with a vast majority of players now preferring the convenience of instant digital downloads over physical retail purchases.

Under this new operational roadmap, any PlayStation title launched after the January 2028 cutoff—regardless of whether it is developed by Sony’s first-party PlayStation Studios or external third-party publishers—will release exclusively in a digital format. Players will be required to purchase their games directly through the cloud via the native PlayStation Store or redeem digital retail codes. To ease the transition, Sony clarified that the policy change will not be retroactive; all physical discs manufactured and sold prior to 2028 will remain completely functional on compatible console hardware.
