Speaking during Sony’s Q1 FY2026 earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao confirmed that the company will “cautiously” proceed with its long-term strategy. Tao pointed to broader industry trends toward digital content consumption as the core driver behind the decision.
While acknowledging the strong emotional attachment many players have toward physical media, Tao noted that Sony is exploring new ways to keep players engaged within a purely digital ecosystem. Discontinuation plans apply strictly to new releases from 2028 onward, meaning production for existing physical catalog titles will continue unaffected for the foreseeable future.
