Something for the weekend - why we should worry more about AI’s makers than the evil robots bent on human extinction
Will AI wipe out humanity? is the question on the lips this week. Clearly, it is a good one – existentially important, no less. And we can place it aloof the industry, politicians, and the general public alike this week, taking over, at least temporarily from fretting about whether the robots steal our jobs?
But such questions are not new. Humans have been telling stories about the danger of stealing fire from the gods for millennia. In many such myths, legends, and cautionary tales, the acquisition of knowledge itself is seen as the enemy: man’s hubris in a seemingly ordered universe, the damnation of Faust. It would be wise to remember that.
Even so, we are asking the wrong question today. What we should be shouting from the rooftops is this - can good AI come from bad companies? Or from unethical CEOs and aggressive political diktat? And the answer...
