Snap Opens Preorders for Its Uncomfortable-Looking Specs AR Glasses
Snap has begun accepting preorders for Specs, its first augmented reality (AR) glasses. The $2,195 glasses will start shipping this fall, beginning with the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Customers must pay a refundable $200 deposit to get in line.
Specs feature clear displays with a 51-degree field of view and 16 million colors. They come in two sizes, 47mm and 52mm, weighing 132 grams (4.6 ounces) and 136 grams (4.8 ounces), respectively. That may not sound like a lot, but, as our colleagues at PCMag note, Specs look deeply uncomfortable to wear: During a demo, the glasses' arms caused Snap CEO Evan Spiegel's ears to fold in on themselves.
