Smart Home Control Gets Physical

There really is no problem with controlling lighting in a smart home. There are plenty of convenient options, like phone apps, voice assistants, and automated systems. But sometimes it is nicer to have actual buttons and knobs to reach for. Alex Dufetel certainly thinks so, which is why he designed and built a custom lighting console that uses motorized faders to control the smart lights around his home.

The console connects to Home Assistant and provides direct control over lights in multiple rooms. Turning the large aluminum knob cycles through different rooms or groups, with the current selection shown on a small color display. Four faders can then be used to adjust the brightness of individual lights within that group, while four buttons provide quick access to presets.
