Small Businesses, Big Shift: What's Next For India's MSMEs?
India's micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have spent the past decade embracing digital transformation. From adopting UPI and GST to selling through ecommerce marketplaces and using cloud-based software, millions of small businesses have become increasingly digital. Yet, as artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes industries worldwide, India's over seven crore registered MSMEs are moving beyond digital adoption and preparing for the next phase of growth.
A recent CyberMedia Research (CMR) study conducted in June 2026 said, that nearly 78% of Indian MSMEs now rank operational efficiency as their top business priority, ahead of revenue growth (71%) and customer acquisition (64%). More than half (55%) are looking at AI adoption, while 52% are strengthening cybersecurity preparedness. Businesses are now shifting beyond digital adoption to improving productivity, resilience and long-term competitiveness.
