SID SYNTH Turns Vintage C64s Into Live Synthesizers
The Commodore 64's SID chip is responsible for some of the most recognizable sounds of the 8-bit era, but there is no reason it has to be limited to playing old game music. Artist and developer LukHash has created SID SYNTH, a new piece of software that turns a Commodore 64 into a live synthesizer that can be played with a MIDI keyboard and integrated into a modern music setup.
SID SYNTH runs on original Commodore 64 hardware as well as newer Commodore 64 Ultimate systems. Instead of composing music in a tracker, the software was built around the idea of playing the SID chip in real time. A single-screen interface provides access to patches and synthesis parameters, while MIDI support makes it possible to control the system much like a conventional hardware synthesizer.
