Shenzhen Is China’s Silicon Valley. Here’s What It’s Like to Visit
As I ducked into the shaded walkway that led through the Shenzhen Cultural Center from the city’s waterfront park, I felt the cool of the passageway wash over me. The tunnel glowed from panels in asymmetric organic shapes spaced across the walls and ceiling – from a distance, they looked like windows into another world. In the heat, the minimalism of the space felt calming, almost like being in an Apple Store.
This was somewhat ironic, because the structure I was walking through is known colloquially as “the giant AirPod.” I’ll give you one guess as to what it looks like. Apple had no hand in the design of the white capsule-shaped building that occupies the plum position in Shenzhen’s cityscape, but you could be forgiven for thinking it did.
