Sega nearly killed Sonic before the movies revived the franchise

Through the looking glass: Sonic the Hedgehog has been the face of Sega for well over three decades. In the early 90s, Sonic squared off with Mario for 16-bit console supremacy – and some say he got the better of the bout. But it hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows for the furry blue hedgehog. Indeed, at one point in the not too distant past, Sega almost did away with their iconic mascot.
During a recent interview at the Tokyo Game Show, Sonic boss Takashi Iizuka recalled both the good and bad times. "During the worst times, I was told by the higher-ups that we should cancel the entire franchise. I had to fight within the organization to keep the franchise as long as possible."
