Seeed Studio Squeezes up to 30 GPIO Pins into Its Smallest Board Footprint
Seeed Studio's XIAO development boards are very popular in the maker community because they squeeze powerful microcontrollers into a footprint that is barely larger than a postage stamp. But that tiny size comes with an obvious compromise: there isn't much room for pins. Seeed Studio is now addressing that limitation with two new “Plus” models that add a bunch of extra I/O without making the boards any larger.
The new XIAO SAMD21 Plus and XIAO RP2040 Plus are upgraded versions of the company's existing boards built around Microchip's SAMD21 and Raspberry Pi's RP2040, respectively. Both retain the familiar 21 × 17.8mm XIAO footprint, but redesigned castellations provide access to far more GPIO pins.
The $5.90 XIAO SAMD21 Plus uses the same ATSAMD21G18A as its predecessor. That is a 32-bit Arm Cortex-M0+ microcontroller running at up to 48 MHz, with 32 KB of SRAM and 256 KB of flash memory. The...
