Samsung and SK Hynix to Produce Advanced RAM in Chinese Factories
Facing the looming threat of Chinese competition, like CXMT, major memory manufacturers Samsung and SK Hynix are upgrading their Chinese fabs to produce more advanced memory products. While it will primarily be for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in data centers, it could still help curb the supply slack in the global memory market, with some positive knock-on effects for consumers.
Tom's Hardware reports that several sources say Samsung plans to upgrade its Xian plant to produce advanced 286-layer flash chips by the end of the year. SK Hynix is reportedly targeting an upgrade of its Dalian facility to produce 240-layer NAND Flash chips.
Although these chips would still be inferior to the cutting-edge flash memory produced at their South Korean factories, upgrading Chinese factories will let them compete more directly with the burgeoning threat from CXMT and other Chinese suppliers. They have filled many of the gaps left by the...
