- Russia claims 80% of its Tu-160M bomber systems are modernized
- Russia's Tu-160M retains its Soviet appearance despite extensive internal modernization
- Modular avionics could allow Russia to upgrade bomber electronics individually
Russia is preparing its Tu-160M strategic bomber for future equipment upgrades through a modular avionics system designed to accommodate technological changes throughout its operational life.
The aircraft retains the distinctive appearance of its Soviet predecessor, although Russian aircraft manufacturer Tupolev claims approximately 80% of its onboard equipment has undergone modernization.
This approach could extend the bomber's service life through successive technological upgrades, similar to the modernization strategy employed on America's B-52 Stratofortress.
Modular avionics designed for future upgrades
Tupolev General Director Yuri Abrosimov said the Tu-160M incorporates a redesigned electronics architecture that allows individual components to be replaced as technology advances.
The arrangement is intended to simplify future modernization by allowing engineers to introduce better equipment without rebuilding the aircraft's...
