Robot Learns to Fold Laundry in a Day
Folding laundry is one of those household chores that seems like it should be easy to automate. Humans can pick up a shirt, figure out how it is oriented, straighten it out, and fold it without giving the process much thought. But getting a robot to do the same thing has proven to be considerably harder. Steven Gong and a team of engineering students recently took on that challenge for their university capstone design project, building an AI-powered laundry folding robot and getting it working in just 24 hours.
There are four arms in the setup, but only two actually handle the laundry. The other two are leader arms that allow a person to remotely control the powered follower arms.
