Rising RAM Costs, iPhone 17’s Success in China Delay the iPhone 18
The success of Apple's iPhone 17 in China has become a key reason the base iPhone 18 will not arrive this September, when Apple would otherwise be expected to announce its next generation of iPhones.
Reports indicate that iPhone 17 sales in China have been much higher than those of the iPhone 16 last year. The most recent generation sharply compared to the iPhone 16 cycle. Not only was the iPhone 17 the best-selling smartphone in Q1 2026, but analysts say iPhone 17 sales in China and the US were particularly strong during the early launch window, and that total iPhone sales in China jumped in the first month after release. Wccftech speculates that maintaining a $799 entry-level price point while doubling the iPhone 17's storage capacity over the iPhone 16 made the base model a strong seller.
