Reject Modernity and Build an '80s Cell Phone
There is a growing sentiment that smartphones are a bad idea—bad for society and bad for our mental health as individuals. At the risk of appealing to nature, I’ll make the broad generalization that we really aren’t “meant” to always be connected and reachable. As I type this, I’m being distracted by texts in a group chat from extended family I don’t even know. It is weird. Kevin Noki agrees and his solution was to build an ‘80s brick-style cell phone.
That isn’t an exaggeration and this isn’t just a 3D-printed shell for a modern smartphone. But it also isn’t a standalone cell phone. Rather, it is a handset that connects over Bluetooth to Noki’s smartphone.
The idea is that Noki can leave that smartphone (an iPhone) out of sight. It can be set to a “do not disturb” mode, silencing calls from most people — but still letting...
