What we're starting to see now is the beginnings of a meaningful break, and we're nowhere near where we want to be, but there's separation.

A confident assertion from Greg Foran, CEO of US grocery giant Kroger as he looks back on his first 100 days in the role. He came in with a big job to do.

Kroger was one fo the beneficiaries of the pandemic, seeing its onlIne ordering and delivery business soar as lockdowns kicked in. But post-pandemic, as occurred with many retailers, while the digital business remained higher than before the crisis, it plateaued out.

More to the point perhaps, despite being the US poster child for Ocado’s retail tech, Kroger wasn’t making a profit from its e-commerce arm. Now, that’s not unusual in its own right - Walmart only started to be profitable in this respect relatively recently, after years and years of investment.
