Qualcomm Hits 5GHz Mobile Milestone With Oryon CPU And FlexCache Architecture
Qualcomm is giving us an early look at the CPU architecture for its next flagship Snapdragon chip ahead of Snapdragon Summit next month. The big news is a custom Oryon core that, for the first time in a mobile chip, clocks up to a blistering 5GHz. The higher peak frequency, combined with better instructions-per-clock (IPC) performance, should help with heavy apps, gaming, and the growing number of on-device AI tasks.
No small feat, Qualcomm says crossing into 5GHz territory was not accomplished solely through manufacturing process shrink improvements, but also purpose-driven microarchitecture design and subsystem tuning. To that end, Qualcomm is introducing a memory sub-system called FlexCache.
"With FlexCache, Prime cores can draw on the entire pool when a workload demands it. Largerworking sets stay resident instead of spilling to memory, so peak performance holds instead oftapering off the moment a task outgrows its share," Qualcomm explains.
