Printable Tiles Double Wireless Speeds

Millimeter wave wireless technology has long been viewed as one of the keys to future 6G networks. Its ability to carry massive amounts of data makes it attractive for everything from ultra-fast wireless internet to augmented reality and next-generation industrial systems. Unfortunately, there's a big problem: millimeter wave signals are notoriously bad at getting around obstacles. A wall, piece of furniture, or a person between the transmitter and receiver can dramatically reduce performance.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego believe they have found a solution to this problem. Instead of relying on complex hardware to redirect wireless signals, they developed passive reflective tiles called FlowForm that cost about $2 each and require no electricity or control electronics. Despite their simplicity, the researchers report that the tiles can nearly double wireless data rates and coverage in challenging indoor environments.
