Pixel-Perfect HDMI Output for the CoCo 2
There’s a lot to love about vintage computers. The hardware is simple and easy to understand, and the limitations make programming them a fun challenge. But there is one thing that virtually all retro computing enthusiasts would be happy to do without: RF modulated video output. Yuck! It’s hard to get these machines connected to a somewhat modern TV, and even after you do, you’ll have a blurry picture with wavy lines moving back and forth across the screen.
That problem led Scott Baker to develop CoCo-HDMI, an open source HDMI adapter for the TRS-80 Color Computer 1 and 2. Rather than converting the computer’s existing analog video signal, it taps into the MC6847 video display generator (VDG) chip and recreates the picture digitally. This gives clean, pixel-perfect HDMI output from hardware that was designed decades before HDMI existed.
