Phantom velocity, by the numbers - New Relic’s Observability Forecast and a new CEO

One in four enterprises runs AI agents in production without monitoring them. Engineers lose 37% of their time to disruption, up from 33%. Nine percent of organizations get hit by high-impact outages several times a day - a 200% year-on-year jump. The headline cost figure barely moves: $73.5 million per enterprise, essentially flat on last year's $76 million.

Those numbers come from New Relic's 2026 Observability Forecast, a survey of 2,575 IT and engineering leaders out this week. The release coincides with a leadership change - Nandini Ramani, formerly of AWS, became CEO on 1 October, with former CEO Ashan Willy continuing as a Board advisor - and three product announcements from this week's New Relic Now event.
