Trust is a loaded word. In ordinary use it collapses into a question about honesty. Are they lying to me? Inside a business it fans out into a dozen different questions asked by different people at different depths, and Neil Ward-Dutton, Research VP for Agentic Automation and AI Technologies at IDC, describes the result as an onion.
I recently spoke with him to clarify what the layers are, since executives are going to spend the next two years being told that their AI must be trustworthy, with little guidance on which part of the onion they should focus on. He says:
