Oslo doesn’t need fast chargers everywhere, and it proves it daily

Oslo had 120,469 electric cars at the end of 2025, nearly half its passenger fleet, and about 78% of its 4,519 public charging points are slow AC units placed where people already park. The EU’s own right to plug sits in Article 14(8) of the recast buildings directive, with transposition due in May 2026.

Nearly half the cars in Oslo are electric, and most of them are charged on slow plugs. The city’s fast chargers are not doing the work, InsideEVs reported.

The fleet numbers come from the statistics office. Oslo had 120,469 electric cars at the end of 2025, out of 246,809 passenger cars in total, and Bergen’s share is higher still.

The charging mix is the surprising part. Of 4,519 public points, about 78% were rated between 3.6 and 43kW, Statistics Norway recorded.
