OpenArm 2.0 Brings Capability Without the Risk
Sitting behind me in my office right now is a Sawyer robot arm that is currently unusable, because Rethink Robotics folded in 2018 and all of the robot’s control is hidden behind proprietary layers. This is a “cobot” that cost about $29,000 when it was new a decade ago, but which is now worth far less than the sum of its parts. For Rethink Robotics customers, the investment was catastrophic. And that’s exactly what you can avoid by purchasing or building an OpenArm 2.0.
OpenArm 2.0 is a two-armed partial humanoid robot similar to the Rethink Robotics Baxter. It isn’t ambulatory, but is very dexterous within its working area. The hardware is impressive, as you’ll see. But more importantly, it is completely open source.
