OpenAI's GPT-Live Lets ChatGPT Listen And Talk At The Same Time
Anyone who has spent time chatting with an AI assistant knows the rhythm. Speak, stop, wait, listen, repeat. OpenAI wants to retire that walkie-talkie cadence for good with GPT-Live, a new generation of voice models now powering ChatGPT Voice. Built on a full-duplex architecture, GPT-Live can listen and talk at the same time, which OpenAI says makes conversations with ChatGPT feel far closer to speaking with an actual person.
Some history helps explain why this is a bigger deal than it sounds. The original ChatGPT Voice was a cascaded system that chained three separate models together, including one to transcribe speech into text, one to generate a response, and one to convert that response back into audio.
