OpenAI Starts Displaying Ads Next to ChatGPT-Generated Images

OpenAI has announced a new ad format for ChatGPT. Later this month, the company will begin testing sponsored slots alongside generated images, ostensibly helping users "imagine how products and services could fit into their lives."

In the scant examples OpenAI has provided so far, ads appear just below images generated from user prompts. It's unclear whether the ads relate to the images being produced, but the company says it will "assess whether a conversation is appropriate for advertising, helping keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts." Ads will also incorporate clear labels identifying them as sponsored elements of the ChatGPT experience.

As they say with any web-connected service, "If it's free, you are the product." For the past few years, OpenAI has gotten by by offering paid plans and using ChatGPT prompts and responses to further enhance its own models, only introducing text-focused ads earlier...
