OpenAI Pushes Beyond Models With New AI Deployment Business
OpenAI has launched a new enterprise-focused unit called the OpenAI Deployment Company, marking a significant expansion of the ChatGPT maker's push into large-scale corporate AI adoption. The new division will help businesses build and deploy AI systems across critical workflows and operations, the company said.
The initiative launches with more than $4 billion in initial investment and will be majority-owned and controlled by OpenAI. The company said it has partnered with 19 investment firms, consultancies, and systems integrators, including TPG, Advent, Bain Capital, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, McKinsey & Company, and Capgemini.
As part of the launch, OpenAI also announced the acquisition of Tomoro, an AI consulting and engineering firm that was formed in partnership with OpenAI in 2023. The deal brings around 150 forward-deployed engineers and deployment specialists into the new company. Tomoro has previously worked with enterprises including Mattel, Tesco, Virgin Atlantic, and Red Bull.
