On 10 August, Meta released Muse Glimmer, a compact open-weight model designed to handle reasoning and agentic tasks on a Mac or PC equipped with a single graphics card. Glimmer was distilled from Meta's more capable Muse Spark model, and Meta says it also plans to release the weights of Muse Spark 1.2.

The important part is not simply that Meta released another model. It is that the model can leave Meta's infrastructure.

That distinction points to a broader shift in AI. For the past several years, the industry has treated the foundation model as its centre of gravity. Whoever trained the most capable system appeared to control the stack. Enterprises rented intelligence through APIs, start-ups built products around those APIs, and governments worried about which countries possessed frontier models.

Open-weight AI is weakening that assumption.

Meta is not alone in recognising the opportunity. IBM and Together AI recently signed...
