Open Source Firmware Frees the Litter-Robot 4 From the Cloud
Most smart home products on the market stop feeling smart the moment the internet goes down. Some might continue working, but their more advanced features commonly depend on cloud services that could disappear at any time. For users who prefer to keep their devices under their own control, Joseph DiGiovanni has developed an open source alternative for the Litter-Robot 4 that replaces its cloud-connected firmware with ESPHome.
The project allows Whisker's automatic litter box to integrate directly with Home Assistant over a local network, eliminating the need for the manufacturer's servers. That means no telemetry leaving the home, no AWS dependency, and no concerns about future cloud shutdowns breaking functionality. Everything stays on the local network, and because it's built on ESPHome, users can modify or extend the firmware however they like.
