Obsolete HP MicroServer Revived with Raspberry Pi CM5
The HP ProLiant MicroServer N40L was a very capable little server when it came out more than a decade ago. Its four drive bays, relatively small footprint, and capable processor made it a popular choice for home servers and network-attached storage (NAS). But computer hardware has come a long way since then, and the N40L's aging AMD Turion processor and USB 2.0 ports are serious limitations today.
That left YouTuber EastMakes with a machine that still had a perfectly usable chassis, power supply, and drive bays but an obsolete motherboard. Rather than throw the whole thing away, he designed a completely new motherboard that replaces the original while retaining the rest of the server. The new system is now modern and perfect for a homelab setup.
EastMakes based his replacement board on a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 (CM5). That provides plenty of processing power while consuming far less energy...
