Never Gonna Let You Down: Soft Robot Gripper Rotates Objects Without Dropping Them
Soft robotic grippers are perfect for picking up objects that would give conventional robot hands trouble. Their flexible fingers conform to unusual shapes and can handle delicate objects without crushing them. But once they have something in their grasp, their options are usually pretty limited. Now, researchers from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Universidad Pública de Navarra have developed a new gripper that can manipulate an object between its fingers without letting go.
That might sound like a small improvement until you think about how often you do the same thing with your own hands. Pick up a jar, and you can rotate it to read the label without putting it down first. Unscrewing a light bulb requires continuously rotating it while maintaining enough pressure to keep hold of it.
