Netherlands picks Groningen data centre for its €201M AI factory supercomputer

The Netherlands’ national AI supercomputer is finally being given an address. On Monday, SURF, the IT cooperative serving Dutch education and research, announced that the machine will be installed at Eurofiber’s data center complex on the Zernike Campus in Groningen.

The installation is scheduled for 2027, and the system is expected to be fully operational by early 2028.

According to RTV Noord, three sites were in the running for the contract, one of them being an annex of the former De Halm strawboard factory in the nearby town of Hoogkerk, which was not selected.

The regional broadcaster pointed out that by selecting Eurofiber, both the government and the region had chosen to use an existing campus rather than constructing a new one.

The report came during a visit by Willemijn Aerdts, the state secretary for digital economy and sovereignty.
