Hewlett Packard Enterprise is preparing to launch the first supercomputer to the surface of the Moon. Riding aboard Astrolab’s FLEX Lunar Innovation Platform rover (a.k.a. FLIP, a smaller version of FLEX), the supercomputer will travel to the Moon's South Pole to lend its AI processing power towards lunar operations and other computing benchmarks. Scheduled to launch as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services mission, the supercomputer aims to establish the infrastructure required to support deep-space exploration and an emerging lunar economy.

Obviously, HPE's Spaceborne Computer-4 is a big deal in edge computing for extraterrestrial environments, running as a self-contained, fanless compute module capable of locally processing complex datasets at the point of discovery. Equipped with low-power CPUs, bespoke GPUs, and Kioxia flash memory, the system is built to operate under extreme temperatures and radiation of the lunar surface.

During its operation on the lunar South Pole, the supercomputer will...
