This is a line in the sand. Tech giants had their chance and failed.
There’s a horrible sense of the inevitable about this morning’s ban on social media for UK teens. It’s been building up a head of steam for some time, and with last week’s series of ‘Look how tech-friendly a government we are’ speeches to accompany London Tech Week safely out of the way, it was time for a bit of Big Tech bashing.
So it is that the UK will, if the plans go through into law, be banning social media use by under-16s, forcing adults to use verification services to access platforms, and looking into how to force under-18 year olds into some kind of curfew system to cut down their use.
All of this pitched as a move to “give kids their childhood back!’.
