Monday Morning Moan - enough with the cutesy names! AI anthropomorphism poses a genuine societal danger, as well as being damn annoying!
Among all the many legitimate concerns aired about AI in terms of safety, governance, autonomy etc etc, mine is, I concede, on the face of it, a petty irritant at best. But it’s one that increasingly bugs me and I need to get it off my chest.
My plea to vendors and end user organizations alike is simple and heartfelt - stop giving your AI agents cutesy names in the hope we’ll like them better! It’s not working. In fact, just the reverse in my case!
Where my abhorrence of anthropomorphism stems from, I don’t know, although I still have a recurring bad dream of nearly falling down an escalator in order to avoid a hug from someone dressed in a giant foam rubber Saasy costume at some Salesforce gig one time.
But maybe I just can’t abide cutesy? In the bad old days, before every piece of Microsoft software...
