Modular Car Tires Could Cut Pollution and Save You Cash — While Sensors Deliver Smarter ADAS
Researchers at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) are working on making vehicle tires more sustainable, less environmentally-damaging, and smarter — prototyping a modular design with replaceable tread that could be packed with sensors feeding back to the in-car computer.
"As it wears down, a conventional tire releases highly harmful particles into the atmosphere," first author Daniel García-Pozuelo, of the UC3M Department of Mechanical Engineering, explains of how the team's modular tire design differs from traditional one-piece tires that shed microplastics, toxic chemicals, and heavy metals as they wear down during driving. "The use of a mechanical bond enables the combination of more sustainable and biocompatible materials."
