Meta Faces Government Scrutiny Over PM Modi's Post Removal
For social media companies, content moderation is no longer only about removing harmful posts. Every moderation decision, whether made by automated systems or through human review, now carries regulatory and political consequences, especially when public institutions are involved.
That reality came into focus after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) summoned Meta's global public policy head following the temporary removal of a Facebook video posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The video was later restored, with Meta saying it had been removed due to an error.
The incident has once again brought the spotlight on how large technology platforms balance automated moderation, platform governance and accountability in one of their largest markets.
What Happened
As per reports, the video was originally posted on July 23 and marked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first direct video message to students amid nationwide concerns over alleged NEET paper leaks and examination irregularities.
