Matching Blood Donors by GPS: The Geospatial Query Design Behind GeoBlood
At 2am someone's father is in an operating theatre in Lahore and the hospital is two units short of B negative. The family does what families have always done: they start calling. Blood bank one. Blood bank two. A cousin who knows someone. A WhatsApp group with four hundred members and no filter for blood type or distance. Somewhere in that mess there are probably nine compatible donors within fifteen kilometres who are awake, willing, and eligible. Nobody can find them.
Blood cannot be manufactured. It can only be donated. So the bottleneck is almost never supply, it is matching speed. That reframing is the entire product thesis behind GeoBlood, a free nonprofit platform now live on iOS and Android across four countries, built and run by a volunteer team. I have been the lead engineer on it since 2024.
