Penang has spent more than 50 years building one of Southeast Asia’s leading semiconductor hubs. It is now running short of land, so Malaysia is creating more of it.

Off Penang’s southern coast, land reclamation is underway for Silicon Island, a 2,300-acre development planned for chip design, advanced packaging, and automated testing. For businesses across Asia-Pacific sourcing AI servers and other enterprise hardware, the project could eventually expand regional semiconductor supply options. However, the first industrial operations are not expected until early 2029, making it a long-term development rather than an immediate solution to hardware availability.
