Mainframe redux (2/20 - how healthy is the mainframe talent pool?
As noted in my earlier article, the mainframe is far from deadand is, in fact, being re-vitalized as an ultra-reliable enterprise transaction engine and data store in a hybrid cloud and AI-enabled world.
But as the last tranche of Baby Boomer mainframe experts start to retire, it does raise questions over just how healthy the talent pool currently is here and whether there is enough (appropriate) expertise around to meet requirements.
Mainframe management and workflow automation software provider BMC's latest report on the big iron space provides some noteworthy insights. In labour availability terms, it reveals that two thirds of respondents in its 2025 survey now identify as either Millennials or Gen Z. They have been trained up over recent years through targeted university progams and vendor initiatives.
