Macron asks Brussels for an under-15s social media ban after France’s own was struck down
Emmanuel Macron has asked the European Commission to ban children under 15 from social media across the bloc, three weeks after France’s highest constitutional authority struck down his government’s attempt to do the same thing nationally.
The request came in a letter to Commission president Ursula von der Leyen dated 29 August, reported by Reuters on Tuesday.
Macron writes that it has become essential to go further through “a new European legislative text”, framing the aim as protecting all children in the Union rather than leaving the question to member states one at a time.
On 14 August the Conseil constitutionnel struck down the central article of the French ban, which would have blocked under-15s from TikTok, Snapchat, X, Instagram, YouTube’s social features, WhatsApp, Messenger and some online games from 1 September.
The Council called it an infringement that was not suited, necessary or proportionate to the objective pursued....
