Modern machine vision systems have become very good at recognizing defects, tracking objects, reading barcodes, and making complex decisions locally at the edge. However, acting on those decisions has generally required additional hardware to make the leap from perception to physical control. The M8 Controller Box recently introduced by Luxonis is intended to eliminate that extra layer by connecting directly to an OAK4 camera through its M8 interface, enabling low-latency control of external hardware from within the camera's own vision pipeline.

The M8 Controller Box adds GPIOs, relays, CAN bus, serial connectivity, and USB expansion directly to the OAK4 platform. This removes the need for an intermediary PC or PLC in many automation workflows, allowing edge AI applications to interact directly with machinery, sensors, and industrial equipment.
