Little House on the Prairie is now on Netflix, and thankfully it's well worth watching — but the classic Western drama falls victim to 'the Netflix look'
Perhaps I was wrong to think that we didn't need another adaptation of Little House on the Prairie, as Netflix has definitely proved why we need low-stakes, community-led drama in our lives. Just don't think it will look any different from anything you've ever binged on the streamer.
Pros
- +Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls is absolutely sublime
- +The kids run rings around the adult cast
- +Deals with Osage tensions with apt sensitivity
- +A faithful adaptation of the original books
- +Very sweet, engaging, low-stakes drama with a fantastic sense of community
Cons
- -Is indistinguishable from anything else currently on Netflix, looks-wise
- -An almost Hallmark level of twee
- -Has less character than the 1974 version
- -No big stakes
