Linus Torvalds is using AI to develop Linux kernel code now
ZDNET’s key takeaways
- Torvalds just released a set of patches, which were largely written with Anthropic’s Claude Code.
- These new patches address an unsolved memory cache slowdown problem when using multiple cores and processors.
- Linus Torvalds had been moving closer to favoring AI, and this was the final step toward embracing it for Linux development.
It had to happen. Linus Torvalds announced to the world that he used AI to write code for the Linux kernel. Who’d thought it? Well, me for one. Over the last few years, I’ve seen Torvalds’ attitude change from skeptical to seeing AI as a useful tool for programmers and maintainers.
In his Git submission, he wrote, “The code, the test programs, the review behind the list above and the first draft of this text were done with an LLM coding assistant (Claude Code) under my direction.”
