Few modern consumer rituals remain as needlessly frustrating as buying a pair of glasses. As a four-eyed journalist, I should know. In a world where we authenticate banking transactions with facial scans and monitor vital signs from smartwatches, updating an eyewear prescription still feels trapped in the mid-twentieth century. You book an appointment weeks in advance, travel across town, and peer into a fifty-pound metallic behemoth called a phoropter. At the same time, a non-AI optometrist asks whether option one or option two looks clearer.

Try skipping that ordeal to shop online, and the friction only worsens. Today, more than 80% of consumers still buy glasses in store, and of the less than 20% who start their journey online, around half give up and finish their purchase in a physical shop.
