Kai Gossner's GPIBee Can Now Act as a Web Interface for Even The Oldest HP Bus-Compatible Instrument
Maker Kai Gossner wants to give every electronic test instrument a working web interface, regardless of whether or not the device pre-dates the invention of the World Wide Web — releasing a new update, Benches, for the GPIBee General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB) adapter.
"A few years ago I put an open-source USB-to-GPIB adapter on GitHub — UsbGpib," Gossner tells us. "[Microchip] ATmega-based, roughly $50 in parts — because talking to my own HP [Hewlett-Packard] and Keithley instruments meant hunting for the one PC that still had the right software and a working driver on it. It grew into a product, GPIBee, with Ethernet and PoE [Power-over-Ethernet] and a VXI-11 server running on the microcontroller itself. That part is ordinary enough. The reason I'm writing is the feature I shipped last week. It's called Benches: a web front panel for instruments that never had one."
