Japan's Robotic Wolves Are Warding Off Bear Attacks—But Are There Enough to Go Around?

Amid record numbers of bear attacks on humans, a Japanese firm that produces "robot wolf" wildlife repellers is facing unprecedented demand. In the first few months of the year, it received orders for more than 50 bear scarers; previously, it wouldn't have received even close to that many in a full year. Combining LEDs, sound emitters, and movable limbs, the robot wolves are increasingly being used to protect farms and other human-occupied areas.

Bears killed 13 people in Japan last year, and there were countless non-fatal incidents of injuries, scares, and damage to property. With 50,000 sightings in total in 2025—more than double the previous year's total—it's clear that in certain parts of Japan, human and bear populations are coming into closer, more regular contact.
