Japan's Game Devs Are Pretty Much All-in on AI
Japan's Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) says 85.8% of respondents to its 2026 game developer questionnaire indicated some form of generative AI use in their work. That's based on 1,349 individual responses from an online survey conducted between May and August this year. Respondents included producers, creative directors, programmers, artists, sound designers, quality assurance, and more.
According to the survey (spotted by Kotaku), 63% of respondents use generative AI daily, and another 22.8% use it occasionally. For comparison, last year's survey found that roughly half (51%) of respondents used AI. But there's a structural difference: In 2025, CESA asked 54 Japanese game companies whether they used generative AI in game creation. This time, individuals throughout the industry got to speak for themselves.
CESA's preliminary survey results don't include all AI possibilities within game dev, such as AI tools used for pathfinding, player pairing, cheating prevention, or NPC behavior. It...
